![]() ![]() Just one more passage that I feel also fits many schools, or at least the students if not some teachers. While reading this passage, I had to wonder just how different this student’s life would be if they went to our school – there would likely be people constantly praising and supporting him for his artistic skills, instead of making him think that the only way he can ever express himself is by doing something he knows can hurt others. This student’s use of the word ‘tagging’ refers to what most people consider graffiti – I’ve always been interested in graffiti, because there’s no doubt that some of those people have an impressive amount of talent. I know it sucks for the people’s property, but getting away with it is a part of the thrill” (21). To hear people talk about my art gives me the ‘ganas’ (strength) to continue what I do… I’m an artist and I love what I do. This is a quote from yet another entry: “Tagging is what gives me a thrill. I’ve always thought that yes, they do make our lives much easier (and lazier on some accounts), but I never realized just how much of a help they truly are to some people, instead of just a luxury. This is something that I find very intriguing, because I never thought about computers from that angle before. Sitting in front of the monitor with my fingers on the keyboard makes me feel powerful in a way I never have before” (148). ![]() ![]() Thanks to spell check, now I feel like there are no limits or boundaries enclosing my ideas and feelings. But these computers completely changed the student’s life – “I didn’t have to substitute a word in my story just because I couldn’t spell it. high that I thought I had dyslexia, he told me that I was just lazy” (147). This student struggles with a learning disability that previous teachers refused to even acknowledge – “When I told one teacher in jr. There is no doubt that many of my peers and I get frustrated when our parents try to get over-involved in our lives this girl would give anything just to have her dad get involved at all.Īnother journal entry describes one student’s perspective on a situation in which their class receives thirty-five brand new computers as a gift. One girl writes, “That would be the perfect Cinderella story for me – no glass slipper, just a ‘how was school today?'” (45). Some things were just so different that it’s hard for me to really even imagine it. This book did indeed provide me with much insight about my own life. ![]()
